Today women and children supported by the residents from Ahmed Kathrada House blockaded the Provincial Public Works to turn on the lights at our occupation. We have organised numerous actions and written numerous letters to the Municipality, City of Cape Town and to the Western Cape Provincial Government who are the custodians of the building to restore basic services at Ahmed Kathrada House. We have been staying at the occupation for 2-years without water & electricity, it’s unsafe for women, children and LGBTQI people that are living in the occupation. HOD of Public Works Jacqui Gooch finally agreed to meet with us after we resisted to stop our blockade. Our scheduled meeting will be on the 3rd of April at 12:30. We have also demanded that Ward Councillor Dave Bryant and MayCo Member for Informal Settlements Xanthea Limberg avail themselves to the meeting. We intend to secure a commitment to turn the lights on.
