For weeks immigrants, mostly refugees and asylum seekers, have peacefully camped outside the UNHCR asking to be relocated to a safer country.
Recently, the owners enforced their property rights and secured an interdict to move people out of the building.
On Wednesday, SAPS and City of Cape Town Law Enforcement were ordered to implement it. They gave everyone ten minutes to disperse. Then they moved in. When people resisted they used clubs and stun grenades.
Wednesday evening, thousands of people are sleeping in the Central Methodist Church –
for them, the only place of refuge in a hostile city.
